Overview

This 2-day private escape from Marrakech is the fastest way to taste the Morocco that lies south of the High Atlas: earthen kasbahs the colour of late afternoon light, and cinematic landscapes that have stood in for half the deserts in cinema. The air turns cool and dry here, the same route Berber caravans have followed for a thousand years on their way to the Sahara.

You climb the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 metres, stop for mint tea overlooking the whole range, and walk through the UNESCO-listed ksar of Aït Ben Haddou. You sleep in a kasbah hotel in Ouarzazate, and on day two return slowly through the Skoura palm grove with its 17th-century mud-built kasbahs. It's quick and quiet, a world away from a tour bus.

Tour Highlights

Tizi n'Tichka pass: 2,260 metres of switchbacks through cedar and juniper, with views that sweep across the whole High Atlas
Aït Ben Haddou UNESCO ksar: the earthen kasbah you've already seen on screen, in Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Lawrence of Arabia
Ouarzazate: Morocco's film capital, home to Atlas Studios and the Taourirt kasbah at sunset
Skoura palm oasis: 80,000 date palms hiding more than two dozen mud-built kasbahs from the 17th century
Kasbah Amerhidil: one of the largest kasbahs in Morocco, and still partly home to a Berber family
Hassle-free private logistics: door-to-door pickup, with your driver handling every transfer

Route Map

Route: Marrakech → Tizi n'Tichka → Aït Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate → Skoura → Tizi n'Tichka → Marrakech.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

1
Marrakech → Tizi n'Tichka → Aït Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate
High Atlas crossing · UNESCO ksar · Ouarzazate sunset
Overnight: Kasbah hotel in Ouarzazate

You leave Marrakech early, while the medina is still half-asleep and the muezzin's call drifts over the rooftops. By nine the road is climbing into the High Atlas, switchbacks cutting through Berber villages where children wave from doorways and women carry bundles of fresh mint to the fields. You stop for tea at the Tizi n'Tichka pass, 2,260 metres up, where the air turns thin and clean and the view stretches to the southern horizon you'll cross by lunch.

By early afternoon you're standing in the shadow of Aït Ben Haddou, the earthen ksar that's stood in for film sets in Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Lawrence of Arabia. It's easy to see why: the way late-afternoon light falls on these mud-brick towers is the closest you'll get to time travel without leaving the planet. A local guide walks you through the fortified village and points out the old caravanserai rooms where Saharan traders once rested before pushing on across the dunes.

Late afternoon brings you into Ouarzazate, Morocco's film capital, and your kasbah hotel for the night. Take an optional sunset drink at a rooftop café overlooking the Taourirt kasbah, then settle into a slow dinner of tagine and Berber bread before sleep.

2
Ouarzazate → Skoura → Atlas Mountains → Marrakech
Skoura palm grove · Kasbah Amerhidil · Atlas return
End: Marrakech (drop-off at hotel or airport)

The morning in Ouarzazate is slow: coffee on the hotel terrace, an optional visit to Atlas Studios where the films were shot, or a quieter walk around the Taourirt kasbah than yesterday's. Mid-morning you head east into the Skoura palm grove, where 80,000 date palms hide more than two dozen mud-built kasbahs from the 17th century. You can almost smell the difference in the air, earthy and slightly sweet, nothing like the drier Ouarzazate plain.

You stop at Kasbah Amerhidil, one of the largest in Morocco, where a Berber family pours sweet mint tea and walks you through rooms that have stayed in use for three centuries. Lunch follows at a local restaurant in Skoura: chicken tagine with preserved lemon, or vegetable couscous if you'd rather.

The drive back follows the same road in reverse, but the light has changed: lower, longer, and the cedar forest above Tizi n'Tichka turns amber as you climb. You reach Marrakech by early evening, in time for one last Jemaa el-Fnaa sunset before your flight or your riad.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is one day at Aït Ben Haddou enough?
For the kasbah itself, yes. A guided walk through the ksar takes about 90 minutes. If you want a sunrise photography session or more time in the surrounding hills, ask about a 3-day version with a second night at Aït Ben Haddou.
Can we extend to add a Sahara desert overnight?
Yes. The most popular extension adds one night at Merzouga or Zagora for a sunset camel trek and a luxury desert camp. Add two nights instead and you can fold in Todra Gorge and the Dades Valley.
Are YoMorocco tours fully private?
Every tour is 100% private. Your group gets an exclusive vehicle, driver, and itinerary for the entire trip, and you're never merged with another group.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancellation is free up to 48 hours before the start date. A 20% deposit secures your dates, and full payment is due 30 days before departure.
Is this tour suitable for families with children?
Yes. The drive is broken up with stops every two hours, the walk through Aït Ben Haddou moves at a child-friendly pace, and the kasbah hotel pool in Ouarzazate is always a hit at the end of day one.
