3-Day Tour from Agadir to Marrakech via Atlas Mountains & Kasbahs

Pickup from your Agadir hotel, or Taghazout, Tamraght, anywhere on the coast, at 8:30 AM. The road runs east through the Souss Valley, where argan trees give way to citrus orchards and the snow-capped High Atlas fills the windscreen. Within an hour and a half you reach Taroudant, a 16th-century walled city often called the "grandmother of Marrakech" because it's what Marrakech looked like before tourism. The medina is small enough to walk in two hours, and the souks are still working markets, not photo opportunities.

Lunch is on a shaded terrace by the southern bab, the old city gate. Then you're back in the car, climbing east into Anti-Atlas country: argan trees give way to juniper, then to high steppe with stone-built Berber villages clinging to the slopes. By mid-afternoon you reach Taliouine, the heart of Morocco's saffron region. A small saffron co-op shows you how the world's most expensive spice is harvested by hand from purple crocus flowers. October is the harvest month, but the workshop runs all year.

Check into your kasbah hotel or riad. Dinner is a slow Berber feast: chicken with preserved lemon, vegetables from the kitchen garden, fresh bread from the wood oven, and saffron-scented mint tea. Out here the night sky is one of the darkest in Morocco. Wrap up warm and step outside for a few minutes before bed.

An early breakfast, then back on the road. The drive east is one of the most cinematic in Morocco: it climbs and dips through the Anti-Atlas before the landscape opens onto the wide pre-Saharan plains. Your driver knows exactly where to stop for the view. By late morning you arrive at Aït Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed earthen ksar that has been a film set in Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Lawrence of Arabia, among others, and it's easy to see why. Late-morning light on these mud-brick towers is the closest you'll get to time travel without leaving the planet.

A local guide walks you through the fortified village, points out the old caravanserai rooms where Saharan traders once rested before pushing on across the dunes, and leads you up to the panoramic viewpoint above the ksar. Lunch is at a riverside terrace restaurant. A short 30-minute drive then brings you to Ouarzazate, Morocco's film capital, with an optional stop at Atlas Studios, where many of the films were shot, before checking into your kasbah hotel.

Late afternoon, you walk the Taourirt kasbah at sunset, a complex of more than 300 rooms once owned by the Glaoui family, who ruled southern Morocco in the early 20th century. Dinner is tagine and Berber bread on a hotel terrace, with the kasbah lit up against the dark sky.

A slow morning in Ouarzazate: coffee on the hotel terrace, a final walk around the Taourirt at a quieter pace than yesterday's. Mid-morning you head north on the route that climbs into the High Atlas. The landscape changes minute by minute as you climb toward the Tizi n'Tichka pass: palm groves give way to scrub, then juniper, then cedar forest.

You stop at the pass for tea at 2,260 metres, with a view that stretches across the entire range, south toward Ouarzazate, north toward the Marrakech plain. On a clear day the air is so thin and clean it almost stings. After the pass, the road switchbacks down through Berber villages where children wave from doorways and women carry bundles of mint to the fields. Lunch is at a roadside terrace with mountain views.

You arrive in Marrakech by mid-afternoon, usually around 3:30 PM, with drop-off at your accommodation, riad, hotel, or airport, depending on your onward plans. If you have time before your flight, ask your driver to drop you at Jemaa el-Fnaa for one Marrakech sunset before you go.
