Description
Overview
This 2-day Atlas Mountains trek from Marrakech swaps the medina heat for cool mountain air and real walking, with the kind of Berber hospitality that never makes it onto package itineraries. You drive 90 minutes south to Imlil, the trailhead for Mount Toubkal, North Africa's highest peak, then leave the road behind. From there you walk into a valley of walnut groves, terraced fields, and stone-and-mud villages, where life still runs on the rhythm of altitude and weather.
You'll cover around 4-6 hours of walking each day with a licensed local mountain guide who grew up in these villages. Overnight is in a traditional gite, bunk-style or family room, with a Berber dinner of tagine and bread baked in a wood oven. This is real walking, not a stroll, though it stops well short of a Toubkal summit attempt. The pace is set by the slowest in the group, with mint tea every 90 minutes.

Morning pickup from your Marrakech hotel. The road south climbs out of the heat, through the saffron fields of Asni and into the High Atlas. By 10:30 you're in Imlil, the cluster of stone houses at 1,740 metres that serves as the trailhead for Toubkal. Coffee at a café terrace comes first, while you meet your licensed mountain guide, born in the valley, who knows every trail and the name of every farmer along it.
By 11:30 you're walking. The first leg climbs gently through walnut groves and terraced fields toward the village of Aroumd, perched on a moraine of glacial debris with the snow line of Toubkal visible above. The path runs mostly along mule tracks, uneven but not technical, the river on one side and woodsmoke drifting from the village ahead. You stop for fresh mint tea and bread halfway up.
Lunch is at a family-run restaurant in Aroumd: tagine of mountain lamb, or vegetable couscous if you'd rather, eaten on a terrace that looks straight up the valley. The afternoon walk continues to a viewpoint above the village, then back down to your gite for hot showers and dinner. The night sky here is the cleanest you'll see anywhere in Morocco.

Breakfast is Berber-style on the gite terrace: fresh bread, olive oil, honey, and mountain tea. By 8:30 you're walking again. The route follows the river up toward Sidi Chamharouch, a small village built around a marabout shrine that pilgrims visit for healing. The trail is rougher today, a proper mountain path gaining about 400 metres of altitude over two hours. There's no summit to reach; the goal is the high meadow with views back down the entire Imlil valley and Toubkal towering above it.
Lunch is with a Berber family, in Aroumd or back in Imlil: couscous on a slow Friday, or tagine any other day. The afternoon descent is easier, mostly downhill, with one final tea stop at a juice stall in Imlil before the drive back to Marrakech. You're at your hotel by 6 PM, sun-warmed, leg-tired, and grinning.
