Overview

Most travellers picture the Marrakech to Agadir road as four hours of empty motorway. It isn't. You climb into the western foothills of the High Atlas, drop into the Souss Valley, Morocco's argan-tree heartland, and reach the Atlantic at Agadir, where a wide bay catches the afternoon sun and the sea breeze cuts the heat by ten degrees.

Along the way you visit a women-run argan-oil cooperative and eat tagine at a Berber roadside riad. By sunset you're climbing the ruined Kasbah of Agadir for one of the best bay views in the country. The next morning moves at Atlantic pace, a slow start before you head back to Marrakech or continue south. This transfer feels like a soft landing after the intensity of the medina, a beach day folded into the drive.

Tour Highlights

Argan-country scenic route: through Imouzzer Ida-Outanane, where goats climb straight into the argan trees
Women's argan-oil cooperative: Berber women cracking argan nuts by hand, a skill passed down for generations
Berber riad lunch: slow-cooked tagine, fresh bread, and local honey on a terrace with mountain views
Agadir Kasbah at sunset: 236 m above the Atlantic bay, one of the great views in Morocco
Beachfront overnight: an Agadir hotel on the corniche or near the marina
Taghazout option: a Day 2 morning in Morocco's surf capital

Day-by-Day Itinerary

1
Marrakech → Imouzzer → Souss Valley → Agadir
Argan country · women's cooperative · Kasbah at sunset
▾
Overnight: Agadir hotel (3-4★, beachfront or marina)

Pickup from your Marrakech accommodation at 8:30 AM. The road leaves the plain fast and starts climbing into the western foothills of the High Atlas, the same range you saw from the medina rooftops, though now the snow-capped peaks sit off to your left. The landscape shifts quickly: olive groves thin out, argan trees take over, and within ninety minutes you're passing villages where goats climb straight into the branches to reach the fruit.

Around midday you turn off the main road into the hills toward Imouzzer Ida-Outanane, a small Berber town known for its honey and seasonal waterfalls. Lunch is at a Berber-run riad on a terrace above the valley: slow-cooked tagine, fresh bread, local honey, mint tea. Afterward you visit a women-run argan-oil cooperative, a quiet workshop where Berber women crack the argan nuts by hand on flat stones and turn them into two oils, a culinary oil used in salads and bread, and a cosmetic oil used in skincare. Buy directly from the women here and every dirham goes back to them.

You reach Agadir by late afternoon, and the drive ends with a climb to the ruined Kasbah of Agadir Oufella, perched 236 metres above the city on a steep hill. The fortress was destroyed in the 1960 earthquake, but the walls and the gate still stand, and the view from up here is one of the best in Morocco. The Atlantic bay curves below you in full, the marina catches the last sun, and on a clear day you can see south as far as the Souss-Massa estuary. Stay for sunset, then check into your hotel, beachfront or near the marina depending on availability, and choose dinner at a seafood restaurant on the corniche or back at the hotel.

End: Marrakech (or Agadir, your choice: same price)

The morning is yours, with two ways to spend it. Stay in Agadir for a slow beach morning: coffee on the corniche, a long walk on the sand, an optional camel ride along the surf line, and a swim if the season allows. Or take the 25-minute drive north to Taghazout, Morocco's surf capital, a cluster of whitewashed cafés, surf shops, yoga studios, and beach bars strung along a crescent of Atlantic coast. Watch the surfers at Anchor Point, wander the village, and linger over brunch at one of the cliff-edge cafés.

You leave Agadir by mid-morning for the return drive to Marrakech, fast and direct on the modern toll road, about 3.5 hours with one coffee stop. You're back in Marrakech by mid-afternoon, around 4:00 PM, dropped at your accommodation.

Prefer to end the tour in Agadir instead? Your driver drops you at your Agadir hotel after the morning beach stop, same price, no extra fee. It's a popular choice for travellers continuing south to Taroudant, Tafraoute, or the Sahara.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the drive from Marrakech to Agadir?
About 3.5 to 4 hours direct on the toll road (250 km), or 4.5 to 5 hours on the scenic argan-country route through Imouzzer Ida-Outanane. We take the scenic route on Day 1, with stops, and the faster motorway on the way back for Day 2.
Can I end this tour in Agadir instead of returning to Marrakech?
Yes. For the same price, you can end the tour at your Agadir hotel on Day 2 morning instead of returning to Marrakech. Just tell us when you book. It's a popular choice for travellers continuing south to Taroudant, Tafraoute, or the Sahara.
What is there to see in Agadir?
Agadir is Morocco's main beach resort: 10 km of golden Atlantic sand, a marina, a modern medina, and the ruined Kasbah on the hill above the bay, best visited at sunset. Rebuilt after the 1960 earthquake, it trades historic architecture for a relaxed, family-friendly pace, and it's the gateway to surf country.
What is argan oil and where does it come from?
Argan oil is pressed from the nut of the argan tree, which grows almost exclusively in southwestern Morocco. The Souss Valley is the heart of argan country, and the cooperatives we visit are run by Berber women who hand-crack the nuts and cold-press the oil. It serves as both a cosmetic and a culinary product, and buying it here supports the women who produce it directly.
Is Taghazout worth visiting?
If you like surfing, yoga, or laid-back beach villages, yes. Taghazout is Morocco's surf capital, 18 km north of Agadir: small, full of cafés and surf shops, with some of the best Atlantic point breaks in North Africa. Day 2 morning includes a stop here, unless you'd rather stay on the Agadir beach.
