Overview

If Marrakech has worn you out, this 2-day private escape to Essaouira is the cure. You leave the heat of the medina behind in the morning, and by lunch you're walking the windswept ramparts of an 18th-century Atlantic port: whitewashed walls, blue shutters, and the smell of grilled sardines drifting up from the harbour. The wind never really stops here, and it's the reason Essaouira still carries its old Berber name Mogador: "the well-protected".

The drive west crosses the argan forest, where you'll spot the famous tree-climbing goats and stop at a women's cooperative to watch argan oil pressed by hand, the way it's been done for generations. Then it's the slow rhythm of an Atlantic fishing town for a night, before you head back to Marrakech the next day with the salt still in your hair.

Tour Highlights

Argan-tree forest: the goats really do climb the trees, and a women's cooperative shows you how the oil is hand-pressed
Essaouira UNESCO medina: whitewashed walls and blue shutters inside an 18th-century Portuguese-French-Moroccan port that's still very much in working order
Skala fort and Atlantic ramparts: the very same walls Orson Welles filmed for his Othello, later used by the Game of Thrones crew for Astapor
Fishing harbour at sunset: fresh sardines and lobster, grilled on the spot and eaten standing up at the dock
Overnight in a riad inside the medina: fall asleep to the foghorn from the port, wake up to seagulls
Slower pace: Essaouira is a town that knows how to rest, and for two days, so will you

Overnight: Riad in the Essaouira medina

Morning pickup from your Marrakech riad. The road west drops out of the city fast, and within an hour you're in dry argan forest, the famous tree-climbing goats balanced on the upper branches like green-and-brown ornaments. They climb because the fruit is delicious, and the kernels they spit out still get collected and pressed into argan oil. You stop at a women's argan cooperative for a quick demonstration of how the oil is hand-pressed, with a tasting of the cosmetic and culinary versions.

By lunch you're crossing the city walls into Essaouira's UNESCO medina. The salt hits you first, then the wind. You drop your bags at the riad, then walk to the Skala fort and the Atlantic ramparts, the same walls Orson Welles filmed for his Othello and where the Game of Thrones crew built the slave city of Astapor. Lunch is fresh fish at the harbour: pick what you want from the day's catch and watch them grill it on the spot.

The afternoon is free for the medina: the silver souk, the woodworkers' alley (Essaouira is famous for thuya wood), the Jewish quarter, or just a slow coffee in the Place Moulay Hassan. Watch the sunset from the ramparts, then finish with a seafood tagine dinner in a riad courtyard.

End: Marrakech (drop-off at hotel or airport)

Breakfast at the riad is long and unhurried, and the morning is yours after that. Walk the Atlantic beach, which stretches uninterrupted for 12 kilometres south of the city, book a kitesurf or surf lesson at one of the local schools, take a horse ride along the sand, or just sit at a café terrace and watch the boats come in.

Lunch is at one of the harbour-front spots, then it's back to Marrakech in the afternoon, about 3 hours direct, with drop-off at your hotel or Marrakech Menara airport.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can we surf or kitesurf in Essaouira?
Yes. Essaouira and Sidi Kaouki, 15 minutes south, are world-class for kitesurfing and have forgiving waves for beginner surfers. A half-day lesson with a local school runs around $40-60 per person, and we'll book it for you in advance.
Is Essaouira windy all year?
Yes. Trade winds blow most days from April to October, which keeps temperatures cool but means a windbreaker is wise. From October to March the wind drops and the city feels almost Mediterranean.
Is the seafood at the harbour safe?
Absolutely. It's caught that morning, you watch it grilled in front of you, and locals eat there too. Stick to fish that's piping hot off the grill.
Can we extend by one more night?
Yes. Essaouira rewards a slower visit, and we can extend to 3 days with a half-day at Sidi Kaouki, a longer beach morning, and an argan-cooperative cooking class.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancellation is free up to 48 hours before the start date. A 20% deposit secures your dates.
