You leave Marrakech early, while the medina is still half-asleep and the muezzin's call drifts over the rooftops. By nine the road is climbing into the High Atlas, switchbacks cutting through Berber villages where children wave from doorways and women carry bundles of fresh mint to the fields. You stop for tea at the Tizi n'Tichka pass, 2,260 metres up, where the air turns thin and clean and the view stretches to the southern horizon you'll cross by lunch.

By early afternoon you're standing in the shadow of Aït Ben Haddou, the earthen ksar that's stood in for film sets in Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Lawrence of Arabia. It's easy to see why: the way late-afternoon light falls on these mud-brick towers is the closest you'll get to time travel without leaving the planet. A local guide walks you through the fortified village and points out the old caravanserai rooms where Saharan traders once rested before pushing on across the dunes.

Late afternoon brings you into Ouarzazate, Morocco's film capital, and your kasbah hotel for the night. Take an optional sunset drink at a rooftop café overlooking the Taourirt kasbah, then settle into a slow dinner of tagine and Berber bread before sleep.

The morning in Ouarzazate is slow: coffee on the hotel terrace, an optional visit to Atlas Studios where the films were shot, or a quieter walk around the Taourirt kasbah than yesterday's. Mid-morning you head east into the Skoura palm grove, where 80,000 date palms hide more than two dozen mud-built kasbahs from the 17th century. You can almost smell the difference in the air, earthy and slightly sweet, nothing like the drier Ouarzazate plain.

You stop at Kasbah Amerhidil, one of the largest in Morocco, where a Berber family pours sweet mint tea and walks you through rooms that have stayed in use for three centuries. Lunch follows at a local restaurant in Skoura: chicken tagine with preserved lemon, or vegetable couscous if you'd rather.

The drive back follows the same road in reverse, but the light has changed: lower, longer, and the cedar forest above Tizi n'Tichka turns amber as you climb. You reach Marrakech by early evening, in time for one last Jemaa el-Fnaa sunset before your flight or your riad.
