4-Day Tour from Tangier to Marrakech via Chefchaouen & Fez

Pickup from Tangier, port, hotel, or Ibn Battouta airport, at 9:00 AM. A quick morning walk takes you through the Tangier kasbah and the small medina, with an optional 30-minute stop at the American Legation Museum, the only US national landmark outside the United States and full of history from the Bowles-and-Burroughs era. Coffee follows at Café Hafa overlooking the Strait, Spain visible across the water.

Mid-morning you head south. The road climbs out of Tangier and reaches Tetouan within the hour, the "white city," capital of Spanish Morocco until 1956 and a UNESCO medina. A quick walking tour covers the Mellah, the silversmith souk, and the Spanish-era art-deco quarter. Lunch is in Tetouan or on the road south.

The drive into the Rif Mountains takes about 90 minutes, through pine forests, terraced fields, and small Berber villages. You arrive in Chefchaouen at golden hour. Check into your riad in the medina, then walk five minutes to Plaza Uta el-Hammam for mint tea and your first proper look at the blue walls. At 5:30 PM you set off for the Spanish Mosque viewpoint, a 25-minute climb above the town for a sunset that ranks among the great views in Morocco. Dinner is back in the medina.

Wake early for Chefchaouen at sunrise, the medina photographers came for, before any other tourists arrive. Walk the empty blue streets with your camera, then breakfast on the riad terrace. You leave at 9:30 AM.

The road south leaves the Rif and reaches Volubilis within two hours, the largest Roman site in Morocco and UNESCO-listed. A 90-minute walking tour with a local archaeologist guide covers the surviving mosaics (Orpheus, Diana, Bacchus floors), the triumphal arch, and the basilica, still standing after two thousand years. The site sits on a wide plain with the Atlas peaks in the distance, and the light here is exceptional in late morning.

A short 30-minute drive brings you to Meknes for lunch and a 90-minute walking tour: the monumental Bab Mansour gate, the tomb of Moulay Ismail, and the royal stables, built to feed 12,000 horses. In the late afternoon, a 60-minute drive takes you to Fez, and you check into your riad in the medina by 5:30 PM. Dinner is on the riad rooftop at sunset, the call to prayer rolling across the medina from a hundred minarets at once.

A full day in the Fez medina, with a specialist local guide who's essential here. The medina is a labyrinth of more than 9,000 streets and alleys, the largest car-free urban area in the world, and your guide knows the routes that cut through the noise.

You see the Bou Inania madrasa, a 14th-century Islamic college and the most ornate in Morocco, the Nejjarine fountain and woodwork museum, and the working Chouara tanneries. Yes, the smell is real, so your guide hands you fresh mint to hold under your nose. Add the brass and copper souks, the carpet souk, and the Al-Qarawiyyin mosque and university, founded in 859 and considered the oldest continuously operating university in the world.

Lunch is at a small riad-restaurant inside the medina. In the late afternoon, choose an optional visit to the pottery quarter, where zellige tile workshops cut every tile by hand, or head back to your riad for tea and an optional 90-minute hammam. Dinner is at a courtyard restaurant in the medina.

An early start, with pickup at 8:30 AM. The road south from Fez climbs into the Middle Atlas, through cedar forests where you might spot Barbary macaques, the same species found around Ouzoud Falls. It runs through Ifrane, the "Switzerland of Morocco," a French-built mountain resort town with red-roofed chalets and Atlas cedar trees, and continues south.

Lunch is in Beni Mellal or at a small Berber roadside restaurant in the Atlas foothills. The afternoon road runs through the rich agricultural plain of the Tadla, past olive groves, citrus orchards, and the Bin El Ouidane reservoir glittering in the distance. About 90 minutes from Marrakech the landscape shifts: the High Atlas appears on the horizon, followed by the long approach into the city itself.

You arrive in Marrakech by mid- to late afternoon, around 4:30 to 5:00 PM, with drop-off at your accommodation, riad, hotel, or Marrakech Menara airport. If you have time before your flight, ask your driver to drop you at Jemaa el-Fnaa for one Marrakech sunset before you go.
