5-Day Imperial Cities Tour from Fez to Essaouira

Pickup happens in the morning, from Fez Saiss airport, your hotel, or your riad. A specialist local guide leads a full day in the Fez medina, a labyrinth of more than 9,000 alleys and the largest car-free urban area in the world, where a guide isn't optional.

You'll see the Bou Inania madrasa (the most ornate Islamic college in Morocco), the Nejjarine fountain and woodwork museum, and the working Chouara tanneries (yes, the smell is real, they hand you fresh mint at the door). The brass and copper souks come next, then the carpet souk, and finally the Al-Qarawiyyin mosque and university, founded in 859 and considered the oldest continuously operating university in the world.

Lunch is at a small riad restaurant inside the medina. Late afternoon opens up: an optional visit to the pottery quarter, where zellige tile workshops still cut every tile by hand, or back to your riad for tea and an optional hammam. Dinner follows at a courtyard restaurant in the medina, with the call to prayer rolling across the city.

You leave Fez at 8:30 AM, and within an hour reach Volubilis, the largest Roman site in Morocco and a UNESCO listing of its own. A local archaeologist guide leads a 90-minute walking tour past the surviving mosaics (the Orpheus, Diana, and Bacchus floors), the triumphal arch, and the basilica, still standing after two thousand years.

A short 30-minute drive brings you to Meknes for lunch and a 90-minute walking tour of the monumental Bab Mansour gate, the tomb of Moulay Ismail, and the royal stables and granaries, once built to feed 12,000 horses.

The motorway runs west to Rabat in the mid-afternoon, about 2 hours, where you check in to your riad in the small medina by 5:30 PM. A sunset walk reaches the Kasbah of the Udayas, a 12th-century Almohad fortress on a cliff above the river mouth, with whitewashed alleys and a tiny Andalusian garden. Dinner follows in the medina.

The morning stays slow in Rabat, with a 90-minute walking tour covering the Hassan Tower (a 12th-century unfinished minaret, twin of the Koutoubia and the Giralda) and the adjacent Mausoleum of Mohammed V, then the Chellah, a Roman site turned Marinid royal necropolis, now overgrown with stork nests balanced on Roman columns.

Late morning brings a 90-minute drive to Casablanca, with an optional 60-minute guided tour of the Hassan II Mosque, one of the largest mosques in the world, built partly over the Atlantic and completed in 1993. Non-Muslims can enter on guided tours, and the interior ranks among the great pieces of contemporary Islamic architecture. Lunch follows on the Corniche in Casablanca.

The afternoon motorway carries you south to Marrakech, about 3 hours, where you check in to your riad in the medina by 6:30 PM. An optional sunset walk reaches the Koutoubia and Jemaa el-Fnaa, just as the storytellers and food stalls set up. Dinner follows at a courtyard restaurant in the medina.

A specialist local guide leads a full day in the Marrakech medina, starting at the Bahia Palace, a 19th-century palace built for a vizier, with painted ceilings, zellige courtyards, and gardens. Next come the Saadian Tombs (a 16th-century royal mausoleum, rediscovered in 1917 and now one of the most visited sites in Marrakech) and the Madrasa Ben Youssef (an Islamic college restored to its 14th-century glory).

Lunch is on a quiet medina terrace. The afternoon brings a slow walk through the dyers' souk, the spice souk, the carpet souk, and the metal-workers' quarter, ending at Jemaa el-Fnaa as the snake charmers, food stalls, and storytellers set up for the evening.

An optional 30-minute drive reaches the Majorelle Garden (Yves Saint Laurent's restored cobalt-blue villa garden) before sunset. Dinner follows at a rooftop restaurant overlooking the medina.

You leave Marrakech at 9:00 AM. The road west runs through olive groves and then argan country, small Berber villages where goats famously climb the trees, past women's argan-oil cooperatives where you can stop and see the production. The drive takes about 2.5 hours, and you arrive at Essaouira by lunchtime.

Lunch happens at the working fishing port, where you choose your fish straight from the boats and have it grilled at a portside stall. A local guide then leads a 90-minute walking tour of the UNESCO medina: the 18th-century ramparts (where Orson Welles filmed Othello), the Skala de la Kasbah with its old bronze cannons looking out across the Atlantic, the small Mellah, and the carpenters' souk, where everything is made from local thuya wood.

The tour ends in Essaouira. We can drop you at your riad inside the walls, your beach hotel, or Essaouira-Mogador airport for an evening flight. An optional onward transfer back to Marrakech (3 hours, no extra fee) is available on Day 6 if you tell us when booking. Most travellers stay 2 to 3 nights in Essaouira to swim, eat, walk the ramparts, and decompress before flying home.
