5-Day Northern Morocco Tour from Tangier to Chefchaouen, Fez & Rabat

Pickup happens at 9:00 AM from Tangier, whether that's the port, your hotel, or Ibn Battouta airport. You start with a quick morning walk through the Tangier kasbah, then an optional 30-minute stop at the American Legation Museum and Café Hafa, where Spain sits visible across the water. From there, an optional 45-minute detour reaches Cape Spartel, the spot where the Atlantic and Mediterranean officially meet, with the Hercules Caves close by.

By mid-morning you're heading south. The road climbs out of Tangier and reaches Tetouan within the hour, the "white city" that served as the capital of Spanish Morocco until 1956. Its UNESCO medina is one that almost no foreign tour bothers to reach. A quick walking tour takes in the Mellah and the silversmith souk, finishing in the Spanish-era art-deco quarter. Lunch follows in Tetouan or somewhere along the road south.

The drive into the Rif Mountains takes about 90 minutes, past pine forest and terraced fields, with small Berber villages perched along the slopes. You reach Chefchaouen at golden hour, check in to your riad in the medina, and walk to Plaza Uta el-Hammam for mint tea. At 5:30 PM you set off for the Spanish Mosque viewpoint, a 25-minute climb above town that delivers one of the best sunsets in Morocco. Dinner follows in the medina.

You wake up early. Chefchaouen at sunrise is the medina photographers travel here for, empty and quiet before the day-trip buses roll in from Tangier. Walk the blue streets with your camera, stop at the kasbah and its small ethnographic museum, then settle into a long Berber breakfast on a riad terrace. Your local guide arrives at 10:00 AM for a slow walking tour of the medina: the stories behind the blue walls, artisan workshops for wool weaving and hand-painted leather, and the small alleys most visitors never find.

Lunch is at a small terrace restaurant in the upper medina, with Rif Mountain specialities such as goat cheese in thyme honey and lamb tagine with prunes, fresh bread alongside. After lunch, walk down to Ras El Maa, the spring at the edge of the medina where local women still wash clothes and the river runs cold and clear straight out of the mountain. An optional 30-minute drive into the Talassemtane National Park adds a Berber farm visit.

At 5:30 PM you can climb back up to the Spanish Mosque for a second sunset (the light shifts completely from yesterday's) or stay low for a quiet rooftop tea in the medina. Dinner is at a courtyard restaurant.

You leave Chefchaouen at 9:00 AM. The road south drops out of the Rif and reaches Volubilis within two hours: the largest Roman site in Morocco, UNESCO-listed, and worth the detour. A local archaeologist guide leads a 90-minute walking tour past the surviving mosaics (the Orpheus, Diana, and Bacchus floors), the triumphal arch, and the basilica.

A short 30-minute drive brings you to Meknes for lunch and a 90-minute walking tour: the monumental Bab Mansour gate, the tomb of Moulay Ismail, and the royal stables and granaries, once built to feed 12,000 horses. Late afternoon brings a 60-minute drive to Fez, where you check in to your riad in the medina by 5:30 PM. Dinner follows on the riad rooftop at sunset.

A specialist local guide leads a full day in the Fez medina, a labyrinth of more than 9,000 alleys and the largest car-free urban area in the world. Walking is slow: 6 to 7 km spread across 6 hours.

You'll see the Bou Inania madrasa, the Nejjarine fountain and woodwork museum, and the working Chouara tanneries (yes, the smell is real, they hand you fresh mint at the door). The brass and copper souks come next, then the carpet souk, and finally the Al-Qarawiyyin mosque and university, founded in 859. Lunch is at a riad restaurant inside the medina. Late afternoon opens up: an optional visit to the pottery quarter, or back to your riad for tea and an optional hammam. Dinner follows in the medina.

You leave Fez at 8:30 AM. The motorway west reaches Rabat in 2.5 hours, where a 3-hour walking tour covers the Atlantic capital: the Kasbah of the Udayas (a 12th-century Almohad fortress with whitewashed alleys and an Andalusian garden), the small medina, the Hassan Tower (a 12th-century unfinished minaret) with the neighboring Mausoleum of Mohammed V, and the Chellah Roman necropolis, where stork nests crown the old Roman columns.

Lunch follows at a small medina restaurant in Rabat. After lunch, a 90-minute drive brings you to Casablanca, the commercial capital, with an optional 60-minute stop at the Hassan II Mosque (one of the largest mosques in the world, built partly over the Atlantic, and one of the few mosques in Morocco that non-Muslims can enter on guided tours).

Drop-off in Casablanca can be your hotel, the train station, or Mohammed V airport, with the tour ending around 5:30 to 6:30 PM. We can also end things in Rabat instead, skipping the Casablanca leg for an earlier finish, or send you back to Tangier. Just tell us when booking.
