6-Day Imperial Cities Tour from Marrakech to Fez

Pickup happens in the morning, from Marrakech Menara airport, your hotel, or your riad. A specialist local guide leads a full day in the Marrakech medina, starting at the Koutoubia mosque (a 12th-century Almohad minaret and the architectural prototype for the Giralda in Seville and the Hassan Tower in Rabat), then through the souks to the Bahia Palace, a 19th-century palace built for a vizier, with painted ceilings and zellige courtyards.

Lunch is on a quiet medina terrace. Afterward come the Saadian Tombs (a 16th-century royal mausoleum, rediscovered in 1917), the Madrasa Ben Youssef (an Islamic college restored to its 14th-century glory), and a slow walk through the dyers' souk and the spice souk. The day ends at Jemaa el-Fnaa, just as the storytellers, food stalls, and snake charmers set up for the evening.

An optional 30-minute drive reaches the Majorelle Garden (Yves Saint Laurent's restored cobalt-blue villa garden) before sunset. Dinner follows at a courtyard restaurant in the medina.

You leave Marrakech at 8:30 AM. The motorway north runs through olive country and reaches Casablanca in about 3 hours. The main stop there is the Hassan II Mosque, one of the largest mosques in the world, with a 210-metre minaret that stood as the tallest religious structure on earth until 2019. Built partly over the Atlantic Ocean and completed in 1993, it opens to non-Muslims on guided tours, and the interior ranks among the most spectacular examples of contemporary Islamic architecture.

Lunch is on the Corniche in Casablanca, overlooking the Atlantic, with an optional walk through the small Habous quarter (the "new medina" built in the 1920s in a French colonial-Moroccan style). A 90-minute drive north in the mid-afternoon brings you to Rabat, where you check in to your riad in the small medina by 5:30 PM. A sunset walk to the Kasbah of the Udayas follows if time allows, then dinner in the medina.

Whitewashed houses with bright blue trim line its lanes, and a tiny Andalusian garden lets stray cats nap in the sun. From the kasbah you walk down into the medina, through the souk and the Mellah, the old Jewish quarter.

Lunch is on a quiet square. Afterward comes the Hassan Tower (a 12th-century unfinished minaret and the twin of the Koutoubia in Marrakech and the Giralda in Seville) and the adjacent Mausoleum of Mohammed V, the royal tomb of the king who led Morocco to independence in 1956.

Late afternoon brings a visit to the Chellah, a Roman site that became a Marinid royal necropolis in the 13th century. It might be the most romantic ruin in Morocco: overgrown gardens, stork nests balanced on Roman columns, the call to prayer drifting in from the city beyond the walls. Sunset finds you back at the riad terrace, with dinner in the medina after.

You leave Rabat at 8:30 AM. The road east leaves the Atlantic plain and runs through cork-oak country, reaching Meknes within two hours, a working imperial city built by Sultan Moulay Ismail in the 17th century as his capital. The walking tour covers the monumental Bab Mansour gate (one of the most beautiful gates in Morocco), the tomb of Moulay Ismail, and the royal stables and granaries, once built to feed 12,000 horses. Lunch follows in Meknes.

A short 30-minute drive brings you to Volubilis, the largest Roman site in Morocco and a UNESCO listing of its own. A local archaeologist guide leads a 90-minute walking tour past the surviving mosaics (the Orpheus, Diana, and Bacchus floors), the triumphal arch, the basilica, and the House of the Dog, with the site spread across a wide plain and the Atlas peaks rising in the distance.

A 60-minute drive in the mid- to late afternoon carries you into Fez, where you check in to your riad in the medina by 5:30 PM. Dinner follows on the riad rooftop at sunset, with the call to prayer rolling across the medina from a hundred minarets at once.

You'll see the Bou Inania madrasa (the most ornate Islamic college in Morocco), the Nejjarine fountain and woodwork museum, and the working Chouara tanneries (yes, the smell is real, they hand you fresh mint at the door). The brass and copper souks come next, then the carpet souk, and finally the Al-Qarawiyyin mosque and university, founded in 859 and considered the oldest continuously operating university in the world.

Lunch is at a small riad restaurant inside the medina. Late afternoon opens up: an optional visit to the pottery quarter, where zellige tile workshops still cut every tile by hand, or back to your riad for tea and an optional hammam, a 90-minute Moroccan steam bath. Dinner follows at a courtyard restaurant in the medina.

The morning stays slow. Breakfast is on the riad terrace, then an optional final 90-minute walk covers the parts of the medina yesterday didn't reach: the pottery quarter (a 25-minute walk outside the city walls, where every tile and bowl is still made by hand on traditional kick wheels and fired in olive-pit-fueled kilns), the dyers' souk, or one last shopping pass through the carpet quarter.
